Winter 2019 Enrichment Program

snow days make-up: we will be offering one make up day for classes that were cancelled due to snow. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday classes will be extended one week as noted below. Most classes end by April 4th, please see the schedule below for your class end dates.  

The program won't run without chaperones. 

Thank you to chaperones who have signed up for Spring classes.  In addition to our committee members who work on some many pieces of the program to make classes possible. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, email enrichment@mannptsa.org or contact Lisa Sheffield for other interesting things to do.

PTSA Enrichment Policies Prior to enrolling your child, please be sure to read through our  Program Policies. By registering for any PTSA after-school program, you agree to comply with these policies.

Parent Volunteer Requirement Enrichment classes must have a PTSA member volunteer present during each and every class.  For the 2018-2019 school year, we need dedicated chaperones for each class.  Chaperones for winter quarter can be found here.

Spanish 

Art, music, drama, games and skits guide our curriculum for our Spanish Classes. We offer after school classes for returning and new students. All grade levels welcome! Grace Kaplan is a seasoned teacher, very dynamic, creative and loves to share her native language.

Hip Hop

Dance uplifts, unites, and empowers children.  It also provides children with an opportunity to express their individuality while working on gross motor skills and developing cognitive and social skills.  Hip Hop is the perfect class for children who want to dance, stay active, and learn how to freestyle!  Musicality, rhythm, and creative movement are key components of this fun, urban/streetstyle dance class that teaches boys and girls alike to step, stomp, and shake it out.  Questions? Beginner/Intermediate Game Development 

Do you play games and wonder how they are created? Would you like to build your own computer programs? Come learn how at the Coding with Kids Academy! In this fun after-school class, you will be introduced to the core concepts of computer programming, including loops, conditionals and variables. Using the Scratch development environment, you will learn how to create your own programs, such as simple games, animations, and interactive stories. With new projects each session, you will be able to express your creativity and advance as a coder! Our progressive curriculum will allow you to move to the next level after just 1-2 sessions.

Cartooniversity

A unique opportunity for kids of all skill levels to explore the art of cartooning with professional cartoonist/illustrator Jeff Johnson. Multiple projects and a positive classroom environment make this one-of-a-kind cartooning class fun, exciting and challenging. Areas of study include: expressions, facial features, action/movement, character development, layout, backgrounds, perspective, lettering and more! The emphasis is on developing each student’s own style. ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED.

Learning and playing chess provides a host of benefits, including improved memory, problem-solving skills, an enhanced ability to think ahead, and potential performance improvement in math and science. The goal is to ensure that all of our students improve at chess, gain valuable life skills, and most importantly, have fun.

Exploring Clay 

Working in a variety of clay types, students will learn techniques to construct unique sculptures while expanding their artistic comprehension of form, shape, space, texture, balance, unity and more. The simple nature of clay allows for important artistic discovery in even the youngest students. It is easy to manipulate but versatile enough to create complex challenging artworks.

Running Club 

Our After School running club is a parent-led program that will encourage students in 2-5 grades to get moving and run or run/walk in a fun and encouraging setting for 20-30 minutes once a week after school. We will meet behind the stairs and will stretch and warm up before running laps around the soccer field. Parent volunteers will keep track of students’ distances, and students will earn incentives when they reach cumulative distances of 5k, 10k, 13.1 miles (half marathon) and 26.2 miles (marathon) during the quarter. Parents who are approved LWSD volunteers are welcome to come and run with their students.

Trendy Crafts Decorate your Space 

Join Trendy Crafts each week and create a unique craft project to decorate your space! Customize your project to fit your taste and personality with all of the latest supplies and techniques! Crafts this session include Starry Night Lanterns, Desk Accessories, Mixed Media Canvases, and so much more!

Fast Break Basketball

3-2-1…Swish! Join us for Fast Break Basketball where we’ll “cross-over” between GAME PLAY and skills stations. The games within the game are where we will expose players to HOOPS skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Test your abilities having fun scrimmaging or playing games like Dribble Scribble, King of the Court, Hot Shot Shooting, Knock Out, and MORE! Be ready to take that last second shot, make that extra pass, and block that go ahead basket while learning the fundamentals of Basketball and the concepts of team work.

LEGO RC 

Robot U’s LEGO® RC (Power Functions®) Have your students learn advanced engineering concepts (torque, gearing, levers, etc.) while they have a blast building remote controlled vehicles and contraptions. In this class students will be paired up and challenged to engineer and build using various LEGO® motors and Technic® parts (often of their own design) to accomplish certain tasks or compete against other teams. This is NOT a free play activity, but a class with actual lessons (regardless of how fun and crazy it is). STEM has never been so much fun.  Recommended grade range - 3rd and up.

Horace Mann Choir

Horace Mann’s very own music teacher, Brad McRae will continue directing this popular choir program.  Students may be asked to purchase music for performances through the music teacher.
