Science Fair

Get ready to explore, experiment, and discover at the Horace Mann Science Fair!  All students are invited to prepare and present a project either individually or with a partner.

Volunteers Needed

We're looking for volunteers to help plan and execute the Science Fair. Your involvement will help make this an amazing experience for our students!  Sign up below to help on the day of the Science Fair.  If you are interested in helping with planning efforts reach out to volunteers@mannptsa.org

PROJECT GUIDE

WHERE TO START

Younger students or first-time participants could create an “informational project”, or a demonstration” which shows a student’s mastery of a specific area of science.

  • The 5 senses
  • Planets in the solar system
  • Mineral hardness scale
  • Bernoulli principle

We encourage older students to design an experiment using the scientific method.

  •  Which material is the best insulator?
  •  What foods attract the most ants?
  • What paper airplane design flies the farthest?
  • Which type of sugar creates the most growth in yeast?
  • What plant fertilizer works best?
  • Which paper towel is the most absorbent?
  • What type of fabric creates the most static electricity?

PROJECT DISPLAY GUIDELINES

At the science fair, you will be allocated space at a table on which to place your project after registering.  Here is a sample board

  • No experiments are to be performed at the school.
  • include your project title, name, and class on a tri-fold display board.
  • The display must stand up by itself
  • Animals, hazardous chemicals, or heat sources may not be brought to the fair
  • Use photographs you’ve taken during your experiments at home.

AT THE FAIR

Please be at your project during the timeframe for each group. A science fair volunteer or "reviewer" will stop by each project, so you can tell them about your experiment. Create and “Ask me these questions” sheet and have it on or near you board to help volunteers know what questions you are prepared to answer about your project.  When you aren’t presenting your project, check out the demonstrations and look at other student’s projects – ask them questions as well!  Note: This is not a drop off event, parents must supervise children during the evening.
